SPANISH 4-AP SYLLABUS 2016-
17
COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is designed for students who wish to
further improve their speaking and listening abilities, strengthen their
reading and composition skills and broaden their knowledge of Hispanic
literature and culture. In order to further strengthen speaking and
listening proficiency, Spanish is the exclusive language of all classroom
activities; additionally, students will be expected to listen to numerous
cultural podcasts throughout the year and report orally on them. To
improve written expression, students study and practice the elements of
essay writing. Also, a research project/book report is assigned in each of
the fall and spring terms. To achieve a high level of reading ability the
students read, translate and analyze selected short stories, poems and a
novel of their choice; the reading of newspaper and magazine articles is
also undertaken in order to discuss current events and issues of interest
to the students. In order to reinforce grammatical concepts, a
comprehensive review of grammar (parts of speech) will be undertaken.
Students are expected to take the Advanced Placement Language Exam in May,
2017. OBJECTIVES: Spanish 4-AP is designed for the development of the four
linguistic skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing. The course
is designed around six major themes (Global Challenges, Science and
Technology, Contemporary Life, Personal and Public Identities, Families &
Communities, Beauty & Aesthertics) in order to create an interesting,
meaningful context in which to explore a variety of language concepts..
The goal of this course is for the student to attain a strong level of
proficiency in the four communicative skills and be successful on the AP

one). Students are responsible for their own materials. All handouts,
work done in class, translations, dictations, AP exercises, etc., should
be kept in your notebook with extra loose leaf paper. If you lose a
handout, I will not give you another one. You can make a copy of another
student's, or come by before or after school and borrow a copy from me.
2. A student is tardy if (s)he is not in the seat when the bell has rung.
Tardies will be handled according to the policies in the Student
Handbook. Three tardies equal one unexcused absence.
3. If the student is absent from class because of illness the work may be
made up according to the guidelines in the Student Handbook. For
example, a one day absence means the work is due the next day. Whenever
you are absent, check with me. I will decide on make-ups and length of
time allowed if there are extenuating circumstances. The student is
responsible for talking to me about make-ups as soon as possible, BEFORE
or AFTER class, not during the instruction period.
4. All homework is to be finished before entering the classroom. It is due
at the beginning of the period and not accepted late. You may not return
to your locker to get your homework after I have started the class.
Please label each assignment: student's name in the top right hand
corner. Underneath the name, the due date, next line is the course name
and period. On the first line is the assignment topic. Always date your
work & indicate which class period.
5. Daily work will include grammar exercises, transcriptions of podcasts,
dictations, compositions, quizzes, oral participation, oral proficiency,
homework, etc..
6. Participation is mandatory in this course. The participation component
of your grade is a subjective, teacher-determined grade based on your
performance.
7. Spanish in the classroom: Spanish is used exclusively in the classroom.
The only use of English will be by the teacher to clarify concepts or to
make important announcements. The students are expected to use Spanish
in the classroom AT ALL TIMES.
8. Extra credit is curriculum/content based and will be made available to
everyone. I will decide when it is offered, if it is offered.
9. Class deportment: Do not interrupt the person speaking in class.
Students are expected to be courteous and respectful of peers and
colleagues. All rules and regulations stated in the Student Handbook
will be enforced.

that particular work and constitute an Honor Code violation.
11. Literary Honor Code: signed by each student.
12. Eligibility will be handled according to UIL guidelines as stated in
Senate Bill One.
